Air bikes used to start around $700 and the serious ones still do. Under $500 you can now get genuine fan resistance with dual-action handlebars — the training mechanism is identical to the expensive machines, because a fan is a fan.

What the budget version actually gives up

  1. Frame mass. This is the big one. A hard interval on a light air bike makes the whole machine hop. Expect to brace it, or to put it on a mat against a wall.
  2. Belt drive. Under $500 chain drive is the norm. Noisier, and it needs occasional attention.
  3. Bearing and crank quality. The forces on an air bike are high and cheap bottom brackets complain. This is where budget machines eventually fail.
  4. Published capacity figures. Most listings here omit them.

What it does not give up

The actual workout. The resistance curve on a cheap fan is the same physics as on an expensive one, and the dual-action arms recruit the same muscles. For a buyer who wants ten minutes of brutal intervals twice a week, a budget air bike delivers almost everything the expensive one does.

Is it worth saving for the AD7?

If you will use the bike several times a week for years, yes — the Schwinn AD7's belt drive and 113 lb frame make it a materially nicer machine to live with, and air bikes are long-lived enough that the amortized difference is small. If this is an experiment, start cheap. Air bikes covers the full range.

Frequently asked questions

Are cheap air bikes worth buying?
Yes, with one caveat: the workout is genuinely the same, because a fan is a fan. What you give up is frame mass, which means the bike moves under hard efforts and feels less solid. If you can live with bracing it against a wall, the training value is close to identical.
Why do cheap air bikes move around?
Because an air bike takes force from your arms and legs simultaneously and transmits it through a relatively narrow footprint. A 113 lb frame absorbs that; a 60 lb frame does not. Put the bike on a rubber mat and, if necessary, against a wall.
What is the difference between an air bike and a fan bike?
Nothing — they are the same machine under two names. 'Air bike', 'fan bike' and 'Airdyne' (a Schwinn trademark that became generic) all describe a bike whose resistance comes from a fan rather than a flywheel.
