#ad Prices come from Amazon and change. How this site is funded. Scores are our published editorial rubric — see our methodology.

Most treadmill buying advice is written for runners, which means it ranks machines on motor horsepower and belt length — two specifications that barely matter if you are going to walk. A walker buying a running machine overpays by several hundred dollars for capability they will never use.

The four specs that matter to a walker

  1. Incline range. The most important spec on the list, by a distance. Incline is how walking becomes training. 10% is the practical minimum worth having; 12-15% is better.
  2. Handrails, or something to hold. Not for leaning on — for balance when you change gradient, step on and step off.
  3. Step-up height. The height of the deck above the floor. A high deck is a trip hazard and a psychological barrier. Low-deck machines exist specifically for this.
  4. Noise. You will use this for an hour at a time while doing something else. A loud machine gets used less.

What does not matter

  • Top speed. Anything over about 4 mph is irrelevant. Do not pay for 12 mph.
  • Belt length over about 50 inches. A walking stride does not need 60 inches. Pay for the incline instead.
  • Continuous horsepower above about 2.0 CHP. Walking draws a fraction of what running does.
  • A touchscreen. Especially one attached to a subscription. See subscription costs explained.

The ranking

Ranked on incline, support and step-up height. Top speed is deliberately ignored.

Sunny Health & Fitness Treadmill with Extended Safety Handrails

What it does well

  • Full-length handrails are the right design for unsteady users, not a stub to grab at
  • Low deck height reduces the step-up that stops people using a treadmill at all
  • Powered and self-contained — no phone required

Where it falls short

  • Sunny does not publish motor or deck figures on this listing
  • Handrails make the footprint wider than the deck suggests
  • Walking speeds only

A 2.5 CHP walker's treadmill with a lifetime frame warranty — the cheapest machine here we would call genuinely durable, as long as you are not running daily.

Every console readout works unsubscribed. Bluetooth lets you stream to third-party apps you already pay for (or do not) — Horizon does not sell a required plan.

Specifications per Horizon Fitness published specifications.

What it does well

  • Lifetime frame warranty at a price where most frames carry one to five years
  • Bluetooth speakers and an integrated fan, which the cheap competition skips
  • Folds, and is light enough that one determined person can reposition it

Where it falls short

  • 55″ belt is short — a tall runner will clip the motor cowl
  • 2.5 CHP is a walking and light-jogging motor, not a marathon-training one
  • 1-year parts cover is thin next to Sole's three

How much walking actually does

The federal physical activity guidelines call for 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity a week. Brisk walking qualifies, and incline walking qualifies emphatically. A 40-minute incline walk five days a week lands squarely in the middle of that range — on a machine that can cost under $300.

Related: treadmills for walking and running if you want to do both, and treadmill vs walking pad if you are deciding between machine classes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best treadmill speed for walking?
2.5 to 3.5 mph is a brisk walk for most adults, and 3 mph is the pace most incline routines are built around. If you find yourself wanting more than 4 mph, you are jogging and should be shopping from the running lists instead.
Do I need a 60-inch belt to walk on a treadmill?
No. A walking stride fits comfortably on a 45 to 50 inch belt for almost everybody. Belt length matters when stride lengthens at running speed. Spend the money on incline instead.
Is a walking pad or a treadmill better for walking?
A walking pad if it will live under a desk and be used in short bursts through the day; a treadmill with handrails if you will do deliberate 40-minute sessions, particularly at steep incline. The pad usually wins on total minutes walked, which is the number that matters.
How much horsepower does a walking treadmill need?
Around 2.0 CHP continuous is comfortable for daily walking at any sensible weight, and many good walking machines publish less. The horsepower arms race on treadmill listings is aimed at runners; walkers can safely ignore most of it.
