An upright exercise bike sits you over the pedals in roughly the position of a city bike: back fairly straight, hands on bars in front, weight on the saddle. It is the compromise format, and compromise is exactly what many households need.

Where the upright sits between the other two formats

The Schwinn 130's 41″ × 21″ footprint is the argument in a sentence: that is less floor than an armchair. A recumbent at 64 inches long will not go in the same corner.

What to check

  1. Saddle comfort and replaceability. Upright saddles are often the weak point, and many accept a standard bike saddle as an upgrade — check the seat post diameter.
  2. Handlebar position. Fixed bars at the wrong height force a hunched posture. Adjustable is better.
  3. Resistance levels, numbered. 16 is the common standard and is plenty.
  4. Weight. The Schwinn 130's 58 lb is light enough to move and just heavy enough to stay put at moderate effort.

The honest downside

Upright saddles are uncomfortable for the first few weeks, in the same way a real bike saddle is. Most people adapt; some never do, and for them a recumbent is the right machine. If you already know you dislike bike saddles, do not buy an upright hoping this one will be different. See upright vs recumbent.

Frequently asked questions

Upright or recumbent exercise bike — which is better?
Upright if floor space is tight and you want a slightly harder workout; recumbent if comfort, back support or getting on and off easily matter more. The upright has a much smaller footprint — roughly 41 by 21 inches versus 64 by 28 for a typical recumbent.
Are upright exercise bikes uncomfortable?
For the first two or three weeks, usually yes, in the same way a new road bike saddle is. Most people adapt. If you already know bike saddles do not suit you, buy a recumbent rather than hoping. Padded shorts help more than a gel cover does.
Can you stand up on an upright exercise bike?
Briefly, on a heavier model, but they are not designed for it — the frame geometry and weight are not built to take out-of-saddle efforts the way a spin bike's are. If standing climbs are part of your plan, buy an indoor cycle.
How much space does an upright exercise bike need?
Very little — around 41 inches long by 21 inches wide for a compact model like the Schwinn 130, plus a little room to get on and off. That is the format's main advantage and the reason it fits where nothing else will.
