A recumbent bike seats you in a chair with a backrest, legs forward, pedals in front rather than below. It is the least glamorous machine in home cardio and comfortably the most-used one, because comfort is the strongest predictor of whether a machine is still being used in month six.

Who a recumbent genuinely suits

  • Anyone with back trouble. The backrest removes the spinal loading an upright position creates.
  • Anyone with knee or hip issues. The pedal path is in front of you, not below, which reduces the range the knee has to travel under load.
  • Anyone who wants to read or watch something. You are sitting in a chair. This is genuinely why they get used.
  • Older riders and anyone with balance concerns. Step-through frames and a seated position remove the fall risk entirely.
  • Heavier riders. Weight is supported by the seat rather than the saddle and the pedals.

What to check before buying

  1. Step-through height. The lower the frame rail you step over, the better. Some 'recumbents' have surprisingly high crossbars.
  2. Seat rail adjustment range. Check it covers every rider in the household. Rails vary from about 10 inches of travel to over 20.
  3. Resistance levels, numbered. 8 is workable, 16 is comfortable, more is nice.
  4. Footprint. Recumbents are long — 60 to 68 inches is typical. Measure before you order.
  5. Seat back angle. Fixed on most, adjustable on a few. Adjustable is better if two people share.

The honest limitation

You cannot work as hard on a recumbent as on an upright or a spin bike. The seated, supported position caps how much force you can put through the pedals, because you cannot bring bodyweight to bear. For general cardiovascular health that does not matter — the federal guidelines are about accumulated moderate activity, which a recumbent delivers perfectly. For maximal interval training, it is the wrong machine.

Compare the body positions properly in upright vs recumbent bike.

Frequently asked questions

Is a recumbent bike as good a workout as an upright?
For moderate-intensity cardiovascular work, effectively yes — heart rate and energy expenditure at a given effort are comparable. For maximal efforts, no: the seated supported position limits how much force you can generate, because you cannot stand or use bodyweight. For most people's actual goals, that limitation never binds.
Are recumbent bikes good for bad knees?
They are generally the gentlest cycling option. The forward pedal position reduces the knee flexion range under load compared with an upright, and the seat supports your weight. Set the seat so your knee stays slightly bent at full extension, and talk to a clinician if there is a diagnosed condition — see our recumbent bikes for bad knees page.
How much space does a recumbent bike need?
More than people expect. Typical recumbents are 60 to 68 inches long and 24 to 28 inches wide — the Schwinn 230 is 64 inches by 27.7 inches. Add a foot at the rear for the seat rail and room to get on. They do not fold.
What resistance level should I use on a recumbent bike?
One where you can hold a conversation in short sentences but not comfortably sing — that is the moderate-intensity zone the activity guidelines are written around. On a 16-level bike that is often somewhere between 5 and 9, but it depends entirely on your fitness and cadence.
