Treadmill noise in an apartment is two separate problems, and most buying advice conflates them. Airborne noise is the motor and belt hum, which a closed door mostly handles. Structure-borne noise is the impact of your footstrike traveling through the deck, the frame, the floor and into the ceiling below. That one is what generates complaints, and no amount of motor quietness fixes it.
What actually reduces structure-borne noise
- Less mass moving vertically. Walking transmits dramatically less than running. If you live above someone, walk.
- Isolation under the machine. A dense rubber mat, or better, a rubber mat on top of a layer of high-density foam. This is the single most effective intervention and costs under $100.
- A heavier machine, counter-intuitively. Mass absorbs impact rather than transmitting it. A 200 lb treadmill on a mat transmits less than a 50 lb pad bolted to the floorboards.
- Position. Over a load-bearing wall or a structural beam, never in the middle of a span. The middle of a floor is a drum skin.
The ranking
Ranked for low transmitted impact, light weight and storability.

Hours matter as much as hardware
Even a quiet machine at 6 a.m. is a problem. The practical answer in most buildings is to walk rather than run, to use the machine during the day, and to put it on proper isolation. Our apartment noise guide covers mat construction, placement and realistic expectations in more detail.
If running at home in an apartment is genuinely the requirement, consider a bike instead — exercise bikes transmit almost nothing to the floor below, which is why they are the standard apartment answer.
