#ad Prices come from Amazon and change. How this site is funded. Scores are our published editorial rubric — see our methodology.

This page is written for the gifter, not the enthusiast. You probably do not own a treadmill, you are not going to learn what continuous horsepower means tonight, and the person you are buying for has not told you which machine they want. That is a solvable problem, but it is a different one from the rest of this site.

Four things to check before you order anything

  1. Where will it go? This is the question that ruins the most fitness gifts. A treadmill needs its length plus 24 inches of clearance behind it — roughly 100 inches of floor. A bike needs about four feet. If you cannot picture the spot, buy smaller.
  2. Will it get through the door? Measure the front door, the tightest hallway turn and the staircase half-landing. Check the *shipping box* dimensions, which are larger than the assembled machine.
  3. Does it need assembling? Some machines arrive fully assembled; most need an hour and two people. A gift that sits in a box for three weeks is not a gift. Several picks below ship assembled or installation-free.
  4. What is the return policy? You are guessing about someone else's preferences. Buy where returns are easy and keep the packaging until they have used it twice.

The gift calculus is different from the buyer calculus

Why we lean toward bikes and walking pads for gifts

  • They are smaller. A bike is a third of a treadmill's floor area, and a walking pad slides under a bed.
  • They need less setup. Several arrive ready to use.
  • They imply less. A $250 walking pad is an easy thing to try. A $1,500 treadmill is a commitment someone else made on your behalf.
  • They are harder to get wrong. No motor to be undersized, no deck to be too short.

Avoid anything with a subscription attached

A connected machine is a poor gift specifically because you are handing someone a recurring bill. At a representative $39 a month that is over $1,400 across three years, and they did not agree to it. Everything on this page works fully with no account and no monthly fee — see the subscription cost calculator for the arithmetic.

If you genuinely do not know what they want

Two honest options. Buy something small and useful alongside the suggestion — a dense rubber mat, a good tablet holder, decent shoes — or give a gift card and send them the under-$500 cross-category guide, which decides machine type first. Choosing the machine is the interesting part, and some people would rather do it themselves.

Frequently asked questions

Is exercise equipment a good gift?
It is, when the recipient has actually expressed an interest and the machine is small enough not to be an imposition. It lands badly when it arrives unprompted, because fitness equipment can read as a comment on the person. If they have mentioned wanting to walk or ride more, it is a very good gift.
What home cardio gift needs no assembly?
Several walking pads ship installation-free and are usable within minutes of unboxing, and Sunny sells a treadmill that arrives fully assembled. Most upright and recumbent bikes need an hour and ideally a second person. Check the listing for 'no assembly' or 'installation-free' before ordering.
How much should I spend on a fitness gift?
Enough to be useful and not so much that it obliges them. Between $150 and $400 covers a genuinely good walking pad or exercise bike. Above about $600 the gift starts to imply a commitment the recipient did not make.
Should I buy a treadmill as a gift?
Only if you know where it will go and that the room can take it. A treadmill needs roughly 100 inches of floor including safety clearance, weighs 150 to 250 lb, and usually needs assembly. A walking pad or an exercise bike is a far safer gift for the same reason it is a safer purchase.
What if they already have a treadmill?
Then the useful gifts are the things people never buy for themselves: a dense rubber mat for noise and floor protection, a proper tablet holder, silicone treadmill lubricant, or a Bluetooth cadence sensor to connect an older bike to a modern app.
