#ad Prices come from Amazon and change. How this site is funded. Scores are our published editorial rubric — see our methodology.

Five hundred dollars is where exercise bikes become genuinely good rather than merely adequate. Three things arrive at once: numbered magnetic resistance, frames heavy enough not to move, and brands that sell replacement parts. That last one is worth more than it sounds — a bike with a parts channel lasts a decade, and one without lasts until the first bearing goes.

What the extra $200 over the budget bracket buys

  • Numbered resistance levels, typically 8 to 16. A knob you guess at becomes a dial you can repeat. That turns 'ride for 30 minutes' into a program you can progress.
  • Real frame mass. The Schwinn 230 weighs 80 lb and the 130 weighs 58 lb — both heavy enough to stay planted.
  • A published capacity rating from a brand that tests it. 300 lb from Schwinn means more than 400 lb from an unbranded import.
  • Bluetooth broadcast, on some models, so apps can read what you are doing.

The air bike wildcard

Under $500 also now includes genuine fan bikes, which are a completely different training tool: unlimited resistance that scales with your effort, dual-action handlebars, and a workout that will humble a fit cyclist in four minutes. They are loud and they do not suit steady-state riding. If high-intensity intervals are the plan, read air bikes before buying a magnetic bike.

Where $500 still falls short

A 40 lb flywheel with 100 levels of magnetic resistance and an open Bluetooth broadcast — in other words, the Schwinn IC4 — sits just above this bracket. If you want a studio-style ride that an app can actually read, exercise bikes under $1,000 is the page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best exercise bike under $500?
It depends on body position. For a recumbent, the Schwinn 230 — 16 magnetic levels, an 80 lb frame and a brand that sells parts. For an upright, the Schwinn 130 in a 41-by-21-inch footprint. For a spin bike, the YOSUDA PRO or JOROTO on frame mass. Our ranking above orders them by overall build quality.
Are numbered resistance levels worth paying for?
Yes, more than most people expect. Without them you cannot repeat a workout, which means you cannot tell whether you are improving. A dial marked 1 to 16 turns riding into training.
Is a $500 exercise bike as good as a Peloton?
Mechanically, close — a Schwinn IC4 at just over this budget has the same 40 lb flywheel class and 100 magnetic levels. What you do not get is the integrated screen and the class library, which is what the subscription pays for. If you want the classes, you can run them on a tablet; see Peloton alternatives without a subscription.
Should I buy an air bike or a magnetic bike for under $500?
Air if your training is short, brutal intervals; magnetic if it is steady 30 to 45 minute riding. An air bike's resistance rises as you push harder, which is superb for intervals and vague and unsatisfying at an easy pace. They are also considerably louder.
