Three hundred dollars does not buy a treadmill in the sense a runner means it. It buys a walking pad: a short, narrow belt driven by a small motor, usually with no handrail and almost never with a deck long enough to run on. Pretending otherwise is how people end up with a machine that smells hot after twenty minutes and dies inside a year.
What it *does* buy, if you shop carefully, is a genuinely useful tool for getting 8,000 to 12,000 steps indoors. That is not nothing — the federal physical activity guidelines are built around accumulated moderate activity, not running speed, and a pad under a desk accumulates a lot of it.
What actually separates machines at this price
Almost every pad in this bracket uses the same class of small drive motor and a belt somewhere between 15 and 17 inches wide. Two specs still vary enormously, and both are worth paying for:
- Powered incline. A flat pad at 3 mph is a very light workout. The same pad at 10% incline is a genuine cardio session. Incline is the single biggest difference between a step counter and a training tool, and it has become available under $300 in the last two years.
- Stated weight capacity. Figures range from about 220 lb to a claimed 400 lb at the same price. Treat high claims at low prices as static ratings — what the frame holds standing still, not what it tolerates under the repeated impact of walking. Leave yourself real margin.
What you are giving up
- Belt length. Expect 40 to 44 inches. That is a walking stride. Jogging on it means shortening your stride to fit the machine, which is how people trip.
- Continuous-duty rating. Almost nobody in this bracket publishes CHP. The horsepower numbers you see are peak figures, and a 2.25 HP peak motor is roughly a 1.0 CHP continuous motor — fine for walking, nothing more.
- Service. There is no parts channel. When something fails you are relying on the return window, so buy from a retailer with a generous one.
The ranking
Ordered by how much real training the machine can support, not by price.

How to decide between them
What each step up buys you under $300
- Under $150A flat or lightly inclined pad with a remote. Steps, nothing else.
- $150-$220A handle, which makes the machine usable for anyone slightly unsteady.
- $220-$300Powered incline and a higher capacity rating — the first point this becomes training. See the picks
If you can stretch, the next bracket changes the machine type rather than the trim level. See the best treadmills under $500, where real folding frames with handrails start, or read what you give up at each price for the whole ladder.
