#ad Prices come from Amazon and change. How this site is funded. Scores are our published editorial rubric — see our methodology.

Budget spin bikes compete on advertised flywheel weight, which is unfortunate because it is the least reliable number in the category. A 40 lb flywheel bolted to a 48 lb frame produces a bike that rocks when you stand up. A 30 lb flywheel in a 90 lb frame rides beautifully.

Rank on frame mass instead

Shipping weight is the proxy, and it is in every listing. Under $500 we would not consider a bike whose total shipping weight is under about 70 lb if you intend to ride out of the saddle. The frame is doing the work of staying still while you throw your weight around.

  • Under 60 lb total — fine seated, moves when you stand.
  • 70-90 lb total — the sweet spot at this price. Planted enough for standing efforts.
  • Over 100 lb — studio-adjacent; rare under $500 and worth seeking out.

Then check the fit range

Four-way adjustment — seat up/down and fore/aft, handlebars up/down and fore/aft — is what lets a bike fit a 5'2″ and a 6'1″ rider in the same household. Two-way bikes are cheaper and fit one person. If more than one person will ride it, this is not optional.

What you still do not get

Numbered resistance levels and a Bluetooth cadence broadcast. Both arrive with the Schwinn IC4 just above this bracket — see spin bikes under $1,000. If you want to follow structured classes with matching resistance cues, that is the upgrade worth making.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important spec on a cheap spin bike?
Frame mass, which no listing calls out but every listing implies through shipping weight. A heavy frame stays planted when you stand on the pedals; a light one rocks regardless of how heavy the flywheel is. Look for 70 lb or more in total shipping weight.
Can you stand up on a $400 spin bike?
On a heavy-framed one, yes. On a light one it feels unnerving and the bike walks on the floor. This is the single clearest difference between budget spin bikes and it does not appear in any spec comparison.
Do cheap spin bikes have numbered resistance?
Rarely. Most use an unmarked knob, which means you cannot reliably repeat a session or follow a class that calls for a specific level. Numbered magnetic resistance generally starts around $600 to $800 — the Schwinn IC4's 100 levels being the benchmark.
