#ad Prices come from Amazon and change. How this site is funded. Scores are our published editorial rubric — see our methodology.
Under a thousand dollars you can buy a bike that a cycling app can actually read, with resistance precise enough to repeat a session exactly. Those two things together are what separate training from exercising, and they are the reason this bracket exists.
Why the Bluetooth broadcast matters so much
A bike that broadcasts cadence and speed over standard Bluetooth is a bike that works with every app — Peloton, Zwift, Wahoo SYSTM, Rouvy, or a free one. A bike that does not broadcast is a bike you ride while a tablet plays video at you, with no connection between the two.
This is also, quietly, the anti-lock-in feature. If the app you chose raises its price or shuts down, an open bike keeps working with whatever replaces it. A closed bike becomes furniture. That is the single strongest argument for the Schwinn IC4 at this price.
What 100 levels actually gives you
Precision and repeatability. 'Level 42 at 85 rpm' is a workout you can do again next week and compare. 'About a third of the way round the knob' is not. For anyone following a structured plan, that is the whole ball game.
The ranking
#1 · A Peloton ride feel with no Peloton bill

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026
Schwinn IC4
Schwinn FitnessA 40 lb flywheel with 100 levels of magnetic resistance and open Bluetooth — it rides like the subscription bikes and connects to whichever app you choose, including none.
| Flywheel | 40 lb |
|---|---|
| Resistance | 100-level magnetic |
| Weight capacity | 330 lb |
| Console | Backlit color LCD: HR, speed, time, distance, calories, RPM |
| App support | JRNY, Peloton, Zwift via Bluetooth |
| Pedals | Dual-sided: toe cage and SPD |
| Subscription | No subscription |
Nothing is gated. JRNY is optional, and the bike's Bluetooth broadcast works with Peloton, Zwift or no app at all — every console metric is on the bike itself.
Specifications per Schwinn Fitness published specifications.
What it does well
- 100 discrete magnetic levels mean you can repeat a workout exactly — friction bikes cannot
- Broadcasts cadence and speed over Bluetooth to any app, so you are not locked to one ecosystem
- Dual-sided pedals work with trainers or cycling shoes out of the box
- 330 lb capacity is above the class norm
Where it falls short
- No screen — you supply a tablet, which the included holder expects
- Resistance is a knob, not an app-controlled servo, so classes cannot auto-adjust it
- The most expensive bike here that is not a studio machine

#2 · Studio geometry below studio prices

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026
Sunny Health & Fitness Premium Smart Studio Bike
Sunny Health & FitnessSunny's top indoor cycle: studio-style fit and a connected console, at a price that undercuts the bikes it is imitating.
| Resistance | Magnetic |
|---|---|
| Connectivity | Smart console with app support |
| Flywheel | Not published by manufacturer |
| Weight capacity | Not published by manufacturer |
| Subscription | Subscription optional |
SunnyFit has a free tier; the bike's own console works with no account.
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing.
What it does well
- Studio-bike fit adjustments including fore-aft handlebars
- Magnetic resistance with a connected console
- Sunny parts support
Where it falls short
- Around $700, which is IC4 territory
- No published flywheel or capacity figures
- The SunnyFit app is the intended experience

#3 · The same flywheel, two hundred dollars cheaper

Schwinn IC3
Schwinn FitnessThe IC4's 40 lb flywheel on a friction brake instead of magnets — same ride weight, less repeatability, noticeably less money.
| Flywheel | 40 lb |
|---|---|
| Resistance | Infinite-variable friction (felt pad) |
| Weight capacity | 300 lb |
| Drive | Belt |
| Console | LCD |
| Subscription | No subscription |
There is nothing to subscribe to. The console is self-contained.
Specifications per Schwinn Fitness published specifications.
What it does well
- Identical 40 lb flywheel to the IC4 — the ride momentum is the same
- Belt drive is quiet despite the friction brake
- Significantly cheaper than the IC4
Where it falls short
- Friction pads wear and need replacing; magnets never touch anything
- No numbered levels, so you cannot repeat a workout precisely
- No Bluetooth broadcast — your app cannot see your cadence

#4 · Echelon classes, if you want them

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026
Echelon Smart Connect Bike
EchelonA competent magnetic bike designed entirely around Echelon's class library — good hardware, with a membership baked into the proposition.
| Resistance | 32-level magnetic |
|---|---|
| Frame | Compact, small-space footprint |
| Weight capacity | Not published by manufacturer |
| Console | Device holder, no built-in screen on this model |
| Subscription | Subscription required for key features |
The bike pedals unsubscribed and shows basic metrics, but the class library it is sold on requires a paid Echelon membership.
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing.
What it does well
- 32 numbered magnetic levels — repeatable sessions
- Small footprint for a studio-style bike
- Large class library if you subscribe
Where it falls short
- Unsubscribed it is a bike with a tablet shelf — the classes are the product
- Echelon does not publish a capacity figure on this listing
- Membership cost compounds quickly against an IC4

#5 · A heavier budget spin frame

#ad How we are funded · Price as of October 5, 2026
JOROTO Magnetic Exercise Bike
JOROTOA noticeably heavier frame than most sub-$400 spin bikes, which is what stops a bike rocking when you get out of the saddle.
| Resistance | Magnetic |
|---|---|
| Frame | Heavy steel, stationary |
| Flywheel | Not published by manufacturer |
| Weight capacity | Not published by manufacturer |
| Subscription | Subscription optional |
No required app or account.
Specifications per Manufacturer figures as published on the Amazon product listing.
What it does well
- Frame mass is the single best predictor of a stable budget spin bike, and this one has it
- Magnetic resistance
- Four-way adjustable seat and bars
Where it falls short
- No published flywheel or capacity figures
- Heavy to move into position
- No Bluetooth broadcast

What you are not getting under $1,000
- A rear-mounted flywheel. Sweat lands on the flywheel assembly on every bike here. Wipe it down.
- True power measurement. These bikes estimate power from speed and resistance; they do not measure it with a strain gauge. Treat the watts as a consistent index, not an absolute.
- A built-in screen. Deliberately. A tablet holder and your own device is cheaper and replaceable.
