#ad Prices come from Amazon and change. How this site is funded. Scores are our published editorial rubric — see our methodology.
Under $500, 'folding' usually means one of two very different things: a small upright frame whose deck swings up, or a flat pad that hinges in the middle. The second genuinely disappears. The first stands in the corner looking like a treadmill that has been stood up.
Measure the folded dimension, not the word
The listing will say 'foldable'. What you need is the folded length, width and height in inches, and whether the thing stands unaided. If a listing does not publish folded dimensions, assume the fold is not impressive — manufacturers publish the numbers they are proud of.
- Under a bed needs a folded height of roughly 7 inches or less. Only flat pads manage this.
- In a closet needs a folded footprint under about 30″ × 30″ and the ability to stand upright. Half-folding pads manage it; upright-folding frames usually do not.
- Behind a door needs a folded depth under about 12 inches. Almost nothing in this bracket achieves it.

The capacity trap at this price
Folding frames at this price advertise capacities between 220 lb and 400 lb. Those numbers are static ratings and the hinge is the weak point. We would treat any folding machine under $500 as comfortable up to roughly 75% of its stated figure for walking, and we would not jog on one near the limit at all. Treadmills for heavy users covers what to look for instead.
If the budget can stretch, folding treadmills under $1,000 is where hydraulic assist and a proper 55-60″ deck arrive together.
