On an upright bike the pedals are below you and your knee travels through a larger flexion range while supporting part of your bodyweight. On a recumbent the pedals are in front of you and the seat carries your weight entirely. The knee moves through a smaller arc under less load, which is why clinicians reach for recumbents first.

The setup that makes it work

A recumbent's adjustment is the seat rail distance, not seat height — and the same principle applies as on any bike:

  1. Sit back fully against the backrest. Do not perch forward.
  2. Slide the seat so that at the furthest pedal position your leg is almost straight, with a slight bend. Never locked out.
  3. Check the knee does not travel past roughly 90 degrees of bend at the closest pedal position. If it does, the seat is too close.
  4. Your hips should not rock side to side. If they do, the seat is too far back.

Set it once properly and mark the rail position, so that it gets restored if someone else uses the bike.

What to look for in the machine

  • Long, finely-stepped seat rail. Coarse adjustment means you cannot hit the right position, only near it.
  • A genuinely easy lowest resistance level. Rehabilitation starts far lower than most bikes' level 1.
  • Smooth resistance transitions. Jumps between levels mean sudden load changes through the joint.
  • A backrest that supports the lumbar spine, so you are not compensating with your legs.

Frequently asked questions

Why are recumbent bikes better for knees than upright bikes?
Two reasons: the pedal path in front of you requires less knee flexion than a pedal path below you, and the seat carries your bodyweight so the legs are not also supporting you. Together they mean lower peak force through the joint at any given effort.
How far should the seat be on a recumbent bike?
Far enough that at the furthest pedal position your leg is almost straight with a slight bend — never locked. At the closest position the knee should not exceed roughly 90 degrees of bend. Sit fully back against the backrest when you measure, not perched forward.
Can a recumbent bike help knee rehabilitation?
Recumbent cycling is widely used in rehabilitation because it is non-impact with a controlled range of motion. The specific protocol — resistance, cadence, duration and progression — should come from a physiotherapist, because it differs substantially between a post-surgical knee and an arthritic one.
Is a recumbent bike better than walking for bad knees?
Usually yes, in the early stages, because there is no impact loading at all and the range of motion is controlled. Walking is weight-bearing, which has its own benefits for bone and balance, so most programs reintroduce it as tolerance improves. See our exercise bike vs walking comparison.

Exercise bike vs walking

Walking is free and loads bone; a bike buys controllability and weather independence. Do both.
