Recumbent bikes are unusual in home cardio: the gap between a $450 machine and a $1,700 one is genuinely small. There is no motor, no deck, no impact loading and no fan. A recumbent is a seat, a crank, a magnetic resistance unit and a frame — and all four are cheap to build well.
Where the money does still go
- Seat quality and adjustment range. The most noticeable difference, and the one that decides whether the bike gets used.
- Frame rigidity. Cheap frames flex slightly under load, which you feel as a vague, slightly disconnected pedal stroke.
- Resistance smoothness. Better magnetic units ramp evenly between levels; cheap ones jump.
- Parts availability. Schwinn and Sunny sell spares. Most import brands do not.
What does not vary much
The actual exercise. A $250 recumbent with magnetic resistance and a comfortable seat delivers substantially the same cardiovascular stimulus as a $1,700 one. If budget is the binding constraint, this is the category to be relaxed about.

The capacity question
Recumbent capacity claims range from 250 lb to a stated 400 lb within this bracket. The seated position means the frame carries weight through the seat rail rather than through pedals and bars, so these ratings behave more predictably than treadmill ratings do. Still leave margin — see exercise bikes for heavy riders.
