The Premium Smart Studio Bike is the Sunny to buy if you want a studio ride, and the Smart Recumbent Bike with Resistance Bands is the one to buy if you want to sit down. Those two cover most of why people arrive at this brand. Below them the range splits by body position rather than by quality: an upright for beginners, a folding X-bike for rooms with no spare floor, a heavy fan bike, a seated cross-trainer and the old chain-drive Fitness Pro II.

Sunny is worth a dedicated page for a reason that has nothing to do with any individual bike: it sells individual spare parts direct in the US. At the sub-$400 end of this category, where most machines are landed-cost imports with no parts channel at all, a broken pedal crank or a snapped resistance cable is usually the end of the bike. With Sunny it is a $25 order.

Magnetic or friction — the one spec that matters most here

Five of the seven are magnetic. Magnets never touch the flywheel, so there is nothing to wear, nothing to squeal and nothing to replace, and the levels are repeatable: level 8 today is level 8 next month. Friction resistance uses a felt pad pressed onto the flywheel. It gives an infinitely variable feel that some riders prefer, and it consumes a pad you will eventually replace.

For almost every home buyer, magnetic is the right answer, which is why the Fitness Pro II sits at the bottom of this ranking despite being the brand's longest-running bike. Resistance types explained has the full comparison.

Which body position do you actually want?

  1. Indoor cycle (spin). Forward-leaning, aggressive, drop handlebars. Best for hard efforts, worst for anyone with back or wrist issues. See best spin bikes.
  2. Upright. Sit up, hands on a wide bar, feet below you. The default comfortable bike and the smallest footprint of the non-folding options. See best upright bikes.
  3. Recumbent. Reclined with a backrest and a step-through frame. Easiest to get on and off, kindest to a bad back and a bad knee. See best recumbent bikes.
  4. Folding. An X-frame upright that collapses. A genuine compromise on ride quality, bought entirely for where it goes. See best folding exercise bikes.
  5. Air bike. A fan instead of a flywheel, with arm levers. Resistance scales with effort, so there is no ceiling. See best air bikes.

Where Sunny is genuinely strong

  • Spare parts. The real differentiator. Pedals, seats, resistance cables and consoles are orderable individually.
  • Price per body position. Sunny is usually the cheapest credible option in whichever position you want, including recumbent and air.
  • No subscription requirement. The smart models connect to a free app; nothing on the bike is gated behind a payment.
  • Weight and assembly honesty. Most models ship with the tools and a usable manual, which is not universal at this price.

Where it is not

  • Published specs are thin. Flywheel weights and capacity figures are frequently absent from listings, which is why this page marks them as not published rather than guessing.
  • Consoles are basic. Segment LCDs with app connectivity, not touchscreens — fine, but set expectations.
  • The step up is real. A Schwinn IC4 or a Keiser M3i rides noticeably better than anything here. You are buying 80% of the bike for 40% of the money, which is the whole point.

Sunny against the obvious alternative

The brand this most often gets compared with is Schwinn, which sits a tier up on build and publishes more of its specs. Schwinn exercise bikes ranked covers that lineup, and if you are deciding between the two at the budget end, the honest summary is that Schwinn has the better frames and Sunny has the better parts channel and more positions to choose from.

If the budget is the hard constraint rather than the brand, best exercise bikes under $300 and best exercise bikes under $500 rank across all brands.

Frequently asked questions

Are Sunny Health & Fitness bikes any good?
For the money, yes, and the reason is unusual: Sunny sells individual replacement parts in the US, which at this price point is rare and is often the difference between a five-year bike and a two-year one. The frames and consoles are basic next to Schwinn or Keiser, and the published specifications are thinner than they should be.
Which Sunny exercise bike is best?
The Premium Smart Studio Bike if you want an indoor cycle, and the Smart Recumbent Bike with Resistance Bands if you want to ride seated. Those two are the strongest in the range. The folding X-Bike is bought for where it stores rather than how it rides.
Do Sunny bikes need a subscription?
No. The smart models pair with a free companion app over Bluetooth, and every resistance level and console readout works with no account at all. Nothing on a Sunny bike is behind a paywall.
Are Sunny bikes magnetic or friction?
Most of the current range is magnetic, including all four smart models here. The long-running Fitness Pro II indoor cycle uses friction resistance with a felt pad, which is a consumable. Check the listing for the specific model, because the catalog contains both.
Can you get replacement parts for a Sunny bike?
Yes, and that is the main argument for the brand. Sunny sells pedals, seats, consoles, resistance cables and hardware direct, which is why a failed part is a small order rather than a dead machine.
