Exercise Bikes

Best exercise bikes under $300

This is the bracket where bikes beat treadmills outright — a $250 bike is a real machine, a $250 treadmill is not.

#ad Prices come from Amazon and change. How this site is funded. Scores are our published editorial rubric — see our methodology.

A three-hundred-dollar exercise bike is a genuinely good machine. A three-hundred-dollar treadmill is a compromise. The reason is mechanical: a bike has one moving assembly, no motor, and nothing that has to survive the impact of a bodyweight footstrike 170 times a minute. Almost everything that makes a cheap treadmill fail simply does not exist on a bike.

That makes this bracket the highest-value page on the site for a budget buyer. If the goal is cardiovascular fitness and you are choosing between cheap machines, buy the bike.

The one spec that matters most: resistance type

 MagneticFriction (felt pad)
How it worksMagnets near the flywheel, nothing touchingA felt pad presses on the flywheel
WearNone in the resistance pathPad wears and needs replacing
NoiseNear-silentHiss, and squeaks when damp
RepeatabilityOften numbered levelsA knob position you guess at
Price under $300Increasingly commonThe older default
Why resistance type is the first filter at this price

Magnetic has now reached this bracket and there is little reason to buy friction. The only argument for a friction bike is that the pad is a $20 part you can replace forever, which does appeal if you intend to keep a machine for fifteen years. For almost everyone, magnetic is the right call. Resistance types explained covers both in detail.

What else to look for

  1. Frame mass. Heavier is better and it is the spec nobody lists. A light bike rocks when you stand on the pedals.
  2. Four-way seat adjustment. Up-down and fore-aft. Two-way-only bikes do not fit most people properly.
  3. A published capacity figure with margin.
  4. Belt drive rather than chain. Quieter and maintenance-free.

Frequently asked questions

Is a $300 exercise bike any good?
Yes — far better value than a $300 treadmill. A bike has no motor and takes no impact loading, so the failure modes that kill cheap treadmills do not apply. At this price you can get magnetic resistance, a four-way adjustable seat and a frame that lasts years.
Magnetic or friction resistance on a cheap exercise bike?
Magnetic, in almost every case. Nothing touches the flywheel so there is no wear part, it is near-silent, and levels are usually numbered so you can repeat a session exactly. Friction's only advantage is that a worn pad is a cheap, universally available replacement.
Do cheap exercise bikes need a subscription?
None of the bikes on this page do. Several have a free companion app for tracking, which is entirely optional. If a budget bike's listing emphasizes classes rather than the frame, check whether the classes cost money before you buy.
How heavy should a budget exercise bike be?
Heavier than you expect. Frame mass is what stops a bike rocking when you push hard, and it is the spec most listings omit. If a bike's shipping weight is under about 50 lb, assume it will move around under a strong rider.
