A full-size home treadmill arrives in one box weighing between roughly 150 and 300 lb, and takes about 45 to 90 minutes for two people to assemble with the supplied tools. The frame and deck come built; you attach the uprights, the console mast and the console, and route the wiring. The hard part is not assembly — it is getting the box from where the carrier leaves it to the room where the treadmill will live.

Walking pads are a different proposition entirely. Several arrive fully assembled or need nothing beyond unfolding, which is a genuine reason to choose one if assembly is the thing worrying you.

What delivery actually means

The terms carriers use, and where the work transfers to you

Curbside is the one that catches people out. It is common on heavier machines and it means exactly what it says: the pallet comes off the lift gate onto the street and the driver leaves. If that is a problem, find out before you order rather than on the day, and either upgrade the delivery or arrange help.

The checks to run before the box arrives

  1. Measure every doorway, turn and stair on the route in. A boxed treadmill is wider and less flexible than an assembled one. The narrowest point on the route is the specification that matters.
  2. Clear the assembly space. You need the machine's own footprint plus room to kneel on three sides of it. Assembling in a corridor and then moving it is the hard way.
  3. Confirm the outlet and its circuit. A treadmill wants a grounded outlet on a dedicated 15 A or 20 A circuit with no extension cord — see treadmill power requirements.
  4. Arrange a second person for the delivery window, not for afterward. The lift from box to floor is the part where people hurt themselves.
  5. Have a utility knife, a trash plan and a phone camera ready. Photograph any shipping damage before you cut the shrink wrap off.

What it does well

  • No assembly — unbox, unfold, plug in
  • Powered incline at a walking-pad price
  • Sunny supports its own parts, unlike most sub-$600 imports

Where it falls short

  • Sunny does not publish CHP or deck size on this listing
  • Walking-speed machine; not for running
  • Assembled shipping means a heavy, bulky box

What it does well

  • The folding handle converts it between desk pad and supported walker
  • Arrives assembled
  • Among the cheapest machines here with a handle at all

  • No published motor, deck or capacity figures
  • Handle is for balance, not for leaning on at speed
  • Walking speeds only

Assembly, step by step, on a typical full-size machine

  1. Open the box flat on the floor and inventory the hardware. Manufacturers bag bolts by step. Missing hardware is the single most common reason an assembly stalls, and it is far easier to resolve on day one.
  2. Leave the deck on the shipping base until the uprights are on. It is stable there and it is not stable balanced on its wheels.
  3. Attach the uprights loosely, then the crossbar, then tighten. Tightening in the wrong order forces you to fight the alignment of the last bolt in every assembly of this type.
  4. Route the console cable before you bolt the mast down. Pinching that cable is the mistake that produces a dead console and a complete disassembly.
  5. Level the machine on its rear feet before the first run. An unlevel treadmill tracks its belt off-center, and belt drift gets blamed on the machine.
  6. Run it empty at low speed for two minutes. Listen for rubbing, then stand on it and listen again.

Walking pads: the no-assembly category

If assembly is a deal-breaker, the walking-pad category solves it outright. The three picks above arrive either fully assembled or needing nothing more than unfolding and plugging in, and all three weigh a fraction of a full-size treadmill — which also solves the delivery problem, because they ship as parcels rather than freight.

What you give up is a running machine. Pads are built for walking, with short decks and small motors, and a serious runner will outgrow one immediately. If walking is genuinely what you will do, that is not a compromise: see best treadmills for walking and treadmill vs walking pad.

The first-week checklist

  • Check every bolt again after the first three sessions. Everything settles. This is normal and takes two minutes.
  • Check belt tracking. The belt should stay centered at every speed. If it drifts, the adjustment is two bolts at the rear roller — treadmill troubleshooting has the method.
  • Check the lubrication guidance in the manual. Some decks ship pre-lubricated and some want attention early. This is the cheapest maintenance there is — treadmill maintenance.
  • Keep the box flat somewhere until you are sure. Returning a treadmill without its box is considerably worse than storing cardboard for a fortnight.
  • Register the warranty. Several manufacturers require registration, and the warranty is a large part of what you paid for — treadmill warranty.

If the machine has to come apart again later for a move, moving a treadmill covers doorways, stairs and what folding does and does not solve.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to assemble a treadmill?
About 45 to 90 minutes for two people on a full-size motorized treadmill, using the tools supplied in the box. The frame and deck arrive built - you attach the uprights, console mast and console, and route the wiring. Walking pads are usually 10 minutes or less, and several need no assembly at all.
Do treadmills come assembled?
Full-size treadmills arrive partly assembled, with the deck and frame built and the uprights and console to fit. Several walking pads do arrive fully assembled or need only unfolding. If assembly is the thing putting you off, the pad category solves it outright - at the cost of being a walking machine rather than a running one.
What is curbside treadmill delivery?
The truck arrives, the pallet comes off the lift gate at the curb, and the driver leaves. Everything from the street to the room is yours to handle, which for a 200 lb box means two people and a plan. It is common on heavier machines, so check the delivery method before ordering rather than on the day.
Is it worth paying for treadmill assembly?
In three cases: the machine is going upstairs, nobody available can safely lift a 200 lb box, or a mistake would be expensive. Otherwise assembly is straightforward with labeled hardware and supplied tools. If you only upgrade one thing, upgrade the delivery rather than the assembly - the lifting is the risky part.
Can one person assemble a treadmill?
The bolting is a one-person job on most machines. Getting the deck off the shipping base and standing the uprights up is not - those steps involve lifting awkward weight at an awkward angle, which is where injuries happen. Plan for a second person for 15 minutes even if you do the rest alone.
